Advantages of GPON and EPON Solutions

  • Learning Center    release time:2022-10-13
  • Sopto provides GPON and EPON solutions and related fiber products, including GPON/EPON OLT/ONU, SFP modules, PCL splitters, fiber optic cables.

A PON system typically allows longer distances between the central office and customer premises because it can operate over distances of up to 20 kilometers, which greatly exceeds the maximum coverage provided by DSL.

In this way, fiber deployment in local switching and local loops is minimized, as only one fiber is required in the backbone and only one port per PON in the central office, which allows for very dense CO equipment (more small footprint) and low power consumption.

PON systems offer higher bandwidth due to deeper fiber penetration. While the ultimate goal of fiber to the building (FTTB) is fiber to the home (FTTH), fiber to the home (FTTH) is fiber all the way to the customer premises, and fiber to the curb (FTTC) seems to be the most economical today, at least when The customer base is fragmented, with existing sites installed in the context of a copper wire (more likely DSL) based distribution network.

Furthermore, due to its underlying point-to-multipoint structure, PON systems allow inherent downstream video broadcasting (currently in the form of an analog video overlay service, and in the future - most likely delivered as IP video).

Multiple wavelength stacking channels can be added to a PON without any modification to the terminating ONU modules, adding flexibility and scalability to once deployed fiber optic equipment.

PONs eliminate the need to install multiplexers/demultiplexers in different locations, freeing network operators from maintenance and power supply tasks.

Additionally, PONs allow for simplified upgrades to higher bit rates, additional wavelengths and/or advanced modulation formats. Passive splitters and combiners provide full path transparency in terms of data rates and modulation formats.

Both EPON and GPON systems operate in the so-called burst mode in the upstream channel, where the transmissions (time slots) from two different ONUs are multiplexed by TDM and there is a dead zone (guard band) between them to allow off-laser adjustment Power stage (EPON), aligns incoming data streams, and retrieves clocks between subsequent transmissions (EPON and GPON).

In terms of security, all xPON systems suffer from the same issues associated with P2M system architectures due to the underlying physical infrastructure. Dynamic bandwidth allocation mechanisms (along with security mechanisms) are provided by the respective responsible international bodies (IEEE for EPON and ITU for GPON).
