When we say the fiber connectors, people usually say like “SC/UPC, or LC/APC or FC/PC…” So what do PC, UPC or APC mean?
PC means “Physical Contact Connector”, UPC means “Ultra Physical Contact Connector”, APC means “Angled Physical Contact Connector” which is also called as 8-degree angled end-face. So what is difference between them?
The PC endface is polished with a slight spherical (cone) design to reduce the overall size of the endface. Just like the below picture. This helps to decrease the air gap issue faced by regular flat fiber connectors, resulting in lower optical return loss (ORL), with less light being sent back towards the power source.
With an extended polishing method, we make much better polishing based on the PC endface and make the UPC endface like the below picture. This gives less back reflection than the PC.But people always need lower and lower back reflection. So finally it come into being the APC endface. Like the below picture. With adding a small 8-degree angle to the endface, it allows for even tighter connections and smaller endface radii. So with this 8-degree angle endface, any light that is redirected back towards the source is actually reflected out into the fiber cladding. So this is better than the UPC endface. For better understanding, you may refer to the second picture of below:
