What Are the Key Application Scenarios & Market Prospects of MPO Patch Cord?

  • Industry News    release time:2026-09-09
  • MPO patch cords feature multi-fiber integration, pre-termination, high density and rapid deployment, designed for parallel optical transmission. The mainstream configurations include 8/12/16/24/48 fibers. The two most commonly used types are MPO-MPO trunk cables and MPO-LC breakout patch cords.

    Main Application Scenarios

    1. AI Computing & Hyperscale IDCs (Primary Core Scenario)

Spine-Leaf architecture trunk interconnection, MDA/HDA distribution areas, east-west traffic within GPU clusters:

    Standard cabling for 40G/100G SR4, 400G SR4 and 800G SR8 parallel optical modules

OM4/OM5 multimode MPO is widely adopted. MPO-LC breakout cables split multi-fiber connections into LC duplex ports to link server NICs and optical modules.

HPC and InfiniBand clusters deploy MPO for low-latency, high-density interconnection, saving cabinet cabling space and improving heat dissipation.

Typical use case: Large-scale GPU clusters with tens of thousands of GPUs extensively deploy 16/24-fiber MPO patch cords between switches and GPU servers.

    2. Telecom Operators: 5G Front/Mid-Haul & Metro Central Offices

8/12-fiber single-mode MPO for links between 5G AAU and DU. It supports 25G/50G eCPRI front-haul and addresses high-density cabling in compact base station distribution boxes.

High-density trunk wiring in telecom core rooms, DCI data center interconnections and ODF frames.

Pre-terminated cabling for edge computing rooms and base station aggregation sites, delivering much faster installation than field fiber fusion splicing.

    3. Government, Finance, Enterprises & Campus Structured Cabling

Large enterprise computer rooms, IDCs for government and banking sectors, SAN storage networks, floor-level trunk cabling.

Backbone wiring in commercial complexes and industrial parks; MPO trunks reserve fiber cores for later capacity expansion without recabling.

High-density interconnection between splitters in FTTx central offices and PON rooms.

    4. Other Niche Scenarios

Broadcasting: High-density temporary cabling in large studios and live broadcast vehicles.

Rail transit, military and high-speed optical interconnection inside medical equipment.

High-performance storage arrays and storage area networks.

Unsuitable scenarios: Scattered small-port deployments, long-haul transmission over 1km with WDM. LC/SC simplex cables are more cost-effective in such cases.

    Demand Drivers

1.AI Computing Infrastructure (Strongest Growth Engine)

Massive deployment of 800G optics and gradual rollout of 1.6T transceivers. GPU clusters require huge volumes of parallel optical channels. There is a stable ratio between GPUs and MPO patch cords, so cluster scale directly drives MPO consumption. Meanwhile, speed upgrades push product evolution: the traditional 12-fiber variant is shifting toward 16-fiber (for 800G SR8), 24/48-fiber high-density trunk cables. Higher fiber-count products carry premium pricing, bringing rising volume and ASP across the industry. Hyperscalers in North America and domestic AI computing centers are dual demand drivers, forming the largest MPO market.

    2.Data Center Iteration & Upgrade

Legacy IDCs migrate from 10G/25G to 100G/400G. As Spine-Leaf architecture gains popularity, rack cabling density becomes a critical bottleneck. Pre-terminated MPO solutions drastically cut deployment time and reduce faults from field splicing. New builds and retrofits continuously replace traditional single-fiber LC patch cords.

    3.Sustained Investment in 5G & Edge Computing

5G front-haul and edge data center expansion create steady baseline demand for single-mode MPO. Future 6G front/mid-haul will continue adopting high-density multi-fiber interconnection.

4.Co-Packaged Optics (CPO): Long-Term New Growth Driver

CPO switches require new high-density compact MPO connectors for inter-panel interconnection of optical engines, representing a promising long-term track.

MPO patch cords are the core passive components for high-density parallel optical interconnection. The largest market demand originates from 400G/800G GPU clusters in AI computing centers, followed by hyperscale IDCs and 5G front-haul. Expanding compute capacity and optical speed upgrades fuel rising shipment and pricing. Multimode variants are for short-reach high-speed intra-datacenter links; single-mode for 5G and medium-distance interconnection. Overseas markets including North America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia represent key export growth opportunities.
