  • The optical module is one of the core components of the optical fiber communication network system. With the development of fiber optical communication technology, the optic module package type are becoming more and more diverse. According to the data rate, the optical module can be divided into 1.25G,10G,25G,40G and 100G etc. The following introduces several common optical module types of 40G and above 100G :

QSFP(Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable):4-channel SFP interface, QSFP module was born to meet the market demand for higher density and high-speed pluggable solutions. QSFP module can support 4-channel transmission at the same time, the transmission rate reaches 40Gbps, and the speed and density are better than the 4-channel CX4 interface.

QSFP+(Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable Plus)QSFP+ module is an upgraded version of QSFP module. The QSFP+ module supports 4×10Gbit/s channel transmission, and QSFP+ module can achieve 40Gbps transmission rate through 4 channels. It is a 4-channel small hot pluggable optical module. The interface type is usually LC interface or MPO/MTP interface, which conforms to 40G Ethernet and other standards.

QSFP28(Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable 28)QSFP28 module can support 4-channel transmission, and the data rate of each channel is 25Gbit/s, and the transmission rate of 100Gbs can be realized through 4 channels. Due to the advantages of low cost and power consumption, QSFP28 module is a popular package type in the 100G fiber optic module market at present.

QSFP-DD(Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable-Double Density) : QSFP-DD module is adopts a double-density four-channel small hot pluggable optical module package type, which is more suitable for short distance data centers. QSFP-DD module supports 8 channel transmission, and the rate of each channel is as high as 25Gb/s-50Gb/s. Compared with the QSFP28 optical module, the port rate is increased by 4 times.

    Different of QSFP+ and QSFP28

QSFP+ and QSFP28 are both types of transceiver modules used in high-speed networking applications, but they have some key differences:

Data Rate : The main difference between QSFP+ and QSFP28 lies in the data rate they support. QSFP+ (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable Plus) is designed to support data rates of up to 40 Gigabits per second (Gbps) per port. On the other hand, QSFP28 supports data rates of up to 100 Gbps per port, making it capable of higher bandwidth and faster transmission.

Form Factor : QSFP+ and QSFP28 modules have a similar form factor, which means they have the same physical dimensions and interface. They both use a compact hot-swappable design and a 38-pin connector. This similarity in form factor allows for backward compatibility, as QSFP28 ports can accept QSFP+ modules, although at a reduced data rate.

Lane Configuration : Another key difference is the number of lanes used for data transmission. QSFP+ uses four lanes, each capable of transmitting at 10 Gbps, to achieve a total data rate of 40 Gbps. QSFP28, as the name suggests, utilizes 28 lanes, each capable of transmitting at 25 Gbps, resulting in a total data rate of 100 Gbps.

Power Consumption : QSFP28 modules generally consume more power compared to QSFP+ modules due to the increased data rates and the larger number of lanes. This higher power consumption can have implications for the overall power requirements and cooling considerations in networking equipment.

Applications : QSFP+ modules were commonly used in 40 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) applications, such as data center interconnects, high-performance computing, and storage area networks. QSFP28 modules, with their higher data rates, are primarily used in 100 GbE applications and the evolving 400 GbE deployments.

It's worth noting that there are other variations of QSFP modules as well, such as QSFP-DD (Double Density), which supports even higher data rates, and OSFP (Octal Small Form-factor Pluggable), designed for 400 Gbps applications.
