What is the Fiber Optic Cable?

  • Learning Center    release time:2023-09-19
  • Fiber Optic Cable is also called Optical Fiber Cable, The Fiber Optic Cable consists of five parts : fiber core, cladding, coating, strength member and cable jacket.

The fiber core is made of high-purity SiO2 with small amounts of dopants. The cladding of the inner cladding is to surrounds and protect the fiber core, and reflects light back to the fiber core so that the optical signal propagates along the length of the fiber. The coating is designed to strengthen the fiber and prevent fiber from being bent excessively. The strength member is designed to protect the fiber core from excessive pulling and crushing, especially during installation, and the cable jacket protects the fiber core from shock, moisture and other external influences.

Nowadays, Fiber Optic Cable has higher transmission speed and lower signal loss, which can meet the needs of modern high-speed Internet and broadcast television fields.

    Classification

    1.Direct Buried Fiber Optic Cable

The Direct Buried Fiber Optic Cable is suitable for outdoor installation. This Fiber Optic Cable is armored with steel tape or steel wire, which can be directly buried underground, and has the performance of resisting external mechanical damage and preventing soil corrosion. Direct Buried Fiber Optic Cable widely used in subway, tunnel, long-distance communication, inter-office communication network, core network, MAN, LAN, outdoor access network, etc.

    2.Aerial Fiber Optic Cable

Aerial Fiber Optic Cable is an fiber cable hung on poles. It realizes data transmission and communication by suspending fiber optic cables on poles or other support rods. Different from Direct Buried fiber Cable, Aerial Fiber Optic Cable are suspended above the ground, which can meet the needs of long-distance communication connections between different regions. Aerial Fiber Optic Cables are easy to install and maintain, and are often used in the construction of communication networks in cities, villages and remote areas.

    3.Duct Fiber Optic Cable

The Duct Fiber Optic Cable is used for the outdoor cable in the access network or the customer premises network, generally used in urban areas. Because the Duct Fiber Optic Cable laying environment is relatively good, so the fiber cable is no special requirement for the cable jacket. However, the length of the laying and the location of the connection point must be selected before the laying of the pipe.

    4.Submarine Fiber Optic Cable

Submarine Fiber Optic Cable is a cable wrapped in insulating material. It is laid on the seabed for telecommunication transmission. Submarine Fiber Optic Cable is divided into submarine communication cables and submarine power cables. Current submarine Fiber Optic Cable used optical fibers as materials to transmit telephone signals and internet signals.

    5.Air blowing Fiber Optic Cable

Air blowing Fiber Optic Cable have two types of structures : center tube type and loose tube layer strand type. It is a 250μm single-mode or multi-mode optical fiber inserted into a loose tube made of high-modulus material. The loose tube is filled with non-toxic and harmless waterproof compounds. The Non-metal strength member Aramid Yarn or high-strength Glass Yarn is twisted outside the loose tube,  and then extruded into a black or colored high-density polyethylene (HDPE) jacket to form a cable.

Air Blowing Fiber Optic Cables are used in metropolitan area network (MAN), access network, local area network (LAN), FTTX network, data center, 5G, etc.

    6.FTTH Drop Cable

Indoor Fiber Optic Cable is also called Indoor FTTH Drop Cable. The common FTTH Drop Cable is 1 core, 2 core, 4 core, etc. It is cross-section is Figure-8 cable structure, and the strength member is located in the center of the two circles. The fiber core is located at the geometric center of the Figure-8 structure. and the strength member is available in both metallic and non-metallic construction optional. The Indoor FTTH Drop Cable is suitable for laying into the home in the way of pipeline or laying wire.

How to choose Fiber Optic Cable?

    1. Number of Fiber Optic Cable Cores

The internal structure of fiber optic cables with different core counts is different. Such as fiber optic cable with less than 12 cores adopt a central beam tube structure, which is suitable for aerial laying or pipeline protection network; fiber optic cables with more than 12 cores mostly adopt a layer-twisted structure, which has strong tensile resistance and can be used for direct burial etc.

    2. Transmission Mode of Fiber Optic Cables

According to the different transmission modes of optical fiber in the fiber optic cable, it can be divided into single-mode optical fiber and multi mode optical fiber. Single-mode fiber is mostly used in networks with long transmission distances and relatively high transmission rates, such as long-distance optical fiber network transmission, metropolitan area network construction, etc. Multi-mode optical fibers are mostly used in short distance transmission places, such as in buildings or in areas with relatively short-distances.

    3. Fiber Optic Cable Material

The structure and material of the fiber optic cable not only determine its transmission effect, but also determine the service life of the fiber optic cable. Fiber optic cables with reinforced steel wire, filler and cable jacket structure, or fiber optic cables with loose tube, Aramid Yarn, Tight Buffer, and cable jacket structure, the ability to protect the fiber and deal with the test of external environment is stronger. The fiber optic cable can achieve long distance stable transmission, and the service life can be longer.

    4. Applicable Environment of Fiber Optic Cable

According to the laying environment of the fiber optic cable. Fiber optic cables can be divided into aerial fiber optic cable, direct buried fiber optic cable, duct fiber optic cable, submarine fiber optic cable, etc. Such as aerial fiber optic cable require high strength and small temperature difference coefficient; direct buried fiber optic cable require compression resistance, moisture resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance; duct fiber optic cable and submarine fiber optic cable must withstand water pressure, tension, and waterproof properties, etc.
