What’s the Difference Between T568A and T568B Wiring Standards?

  • Learning Center    release time:2025-11-21
  • When terminating Ethernet cables, especially Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6a, the wiring order inside the RJ45 connector plays a critical role in ensuring stable transmission performance. The two most commonly used pinout standards are T568A and T568B. Although they look similar and share the same electrical performance, their wire-pair arrangement is different. Understanding these standards helps ensure compatibility and consistency in structured cabling projects.

    What Are T568A and T568B?

T568A and T568B are wiring standards defined by ANSI/TIA for twisted-pair Ethernet cables. They specify how the four twisted pairs (eight wires) must be arranged when terminating:

    RJ45 connectors (8P8C)

    Keystone jacks

    Patch panels

Both standards support up to 10 Gigabit Ethernet depending on cable category.

Key Difference: The Wire Pair Order

The major difference lies in the position of the green and orange pairs.

    What’s the Difference Between T568A and T568B Wiring Standards.png

There is no electrical or performance advantage for either standard. Both support the same speeds and are compatible with all Ethernet categories (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, etc.).

The difference is purely related to:

    ● Compatibility

    ● Regional preference

    ● Existing installation consistency

    Which Standard Should You Use?

    Use T568A

    ● You must follow ANSI/TIA-568-C recommendations

    ● Working on residential networks (the default for many housing projects)

    ● You need compatibility with old telephone wiring (pair assignments align better)

    Use T568B

    ● You are working in commercial networks (commonly used in offices)

    ● Your existing network uses T568B (industry-wide adoption historically)

    ● You need to match older installations for consistency

Both T568A and T568B achieve the same performance, but consistency is the key. Choose one standard based on the existing network or project requirements, and use it throughout all terminations.Sopto provides a full range of LAN cabling solutions, including Ethernet cables, patch cords, keystone jacks, patch panels, and professional OEM services. Inquiry: [email protected]  WhatsApp: https://wa.me/+8618688759008/
