    What is Armored Optical Cable?

  • Learning Center    release time:2020-09-22
  • Armored optical cable is an fiber optical cable wrapped with a protective "Armor" on the outside. It is designed according to environmental needs and is mainly used to protect the optical fiber cable from animal bites, moisture, pressure or other damage. Armored optical cables have both the function of resisting strong pressure and tensile, and can effectively protect optical fibers in harsh environments. At present, armored optical cables have been widely used in the communication field

    Armored structure

    1. Tightly packaged optical kevlar : play a role in tensile resistance.

    2. Metal hose: play the role of anti-compression, anti-bending, anti-rat bite.

    3. Metal braid: to resist torsion

4.Outer jacket: PVC is usually used, and flame-retardant PVC, LSZH and other materials are available according to other requirements, which can protect from solvents and wear.

    Armour Types

Armored fiber optical cables can be divided into indoor armored and outdoor armored optical cables according to the place of use; according to the different types of metal armors, they can be divided into interlocking armored optical cables and corrugated armored optical cables.

Indoor armored optical cable, indoor optical cable should be flexible and easy to lay while paying attention to tensile performance. Therefore, aramid yarn is generally used as the material. Indoors are divided into single armor and double armor. Double armor refers to metal hose and metal. Braided fiber optic cables, double-armored fiber optic cables are used in shallow water near shore; single armor refers to fiber optic cables that do not contain metal braided wires, and single armor fiber optic cables are used for occasions outside of these extreme conditions. The main advantages are high tensile strength, high compression resistance, and anti-rat bite resistance; resistance to improper torsion and bending damage; simple construction and saving maintenance costs. The disadvantage is that the price is higher than ordinary optical cables and the weight is heavier. Generally, indoor armored optical cables are more expensive than outdoor armored optical cables, mainly because the cost of optical cables containing aramid yarn is relatively high.

Outdoor armored optical cable, outdoor fiber optic cable pays more attention to tensile resistance, and uses steel tape and steel wire, which are divided into light armored and heavy armored fiber optic cables. Light armor is made of steel and aluminum belts, which are used to strengthen protection and prevent rodents from biting. The heavy armor is a circle of steel wire on the outside to strengthen protection. It is suitable for underwater and direct buried laying methods, and is generally used in riverbeds, seabeds and other environments. The price of heavy armor is more expensive than that of light armor.

Interlocking armored optical cableInterlocking armor is a twisted optical cable with aluminum armor, which has high durability and high compression resistance, and is often used in indoor and outdoor general environments.

Corrugated armored optical cable,Corrugated armored fiber optic cable is made of longitudinal folds wrapped with steel tape. It has super mechanical properties and provides protection against rodent biting. It is often used in outdoor environments.

In the field of modern optical fiber communication, because optical fibers are fragile, they are easily damaged by external forces or the environment. In order to ensure smooth communication, protecting optical fibers is the primary task in the installation of optical fiber communication systems. The armored optical cable wrapped with a protective "Armor" on the outside of the optical fiber can well protect the optical fiber from external damage and reduce loss.
