Comprehensive Introduction to MPO/MTP Fiber Cable Parameters and Connection Instructions

  • Learning Center    release time:2021-04-16
  • MPO fiber optic patch cord is a combination of MPO connector and fiber optic cable. MPO/MTP trunk cable is designed for high-density fiber patching in data centers which can save the space and reduce the cable management issues.

MPO (multi-fiber push-in) cables are covered with MPO connectors at either end, and MTP(Multi-fiber Termination Push-on) cables are equipped with MTP connectors at either end. Improved attenuation and reflection on the standard MPO connector, a version with higher overall performance. From the outside, there is almost no obvious difference between MPO and MTP connectors. In fact, they are completely compatible and matched with each other.

MPO connector types are distinguished by several factors according to IEC 61754-7,such as color, cores (Array Number), Male-Female, Key and polishing type (PC or APC)

MPO connector is a connector for ribbon cables with at least 8 fibers, which is designed to provide multi-fiber connectivity in one connector to support high bandwidth and high-density cabling system applications. It is compliant with the IEC 61754-7 standard and the U.S. TIA-604-5 Standard. At present, the most common fiber counts are 8, 12, 16, and 24. 32, 48, and 72 fiber counts are also possible in limited applications.

The MPO connector has been recognized as an international standard in network architecture for many years and its cost is also much cheaper than MTP connectors.

The MPO fiber optical connector includes optical fiber, sheath, coupling components, metal ring, pin, dust cap, etc., and the pin part is divided into two forms, male and female. The male connector has two PIN pins, while the female connector does not. The connection between MPO connectors is precisely aligned through PIN pins, and the two MPO connectors connected to each other must be a male and a female.

Three types of MPO polarity classification

Type A (straight-through type),the cores are arranged in the same position at both ends of the jumper, that is, 1 at one end corresponds to 1 at the other end, and 12 at one end corresponds to 12 at the other end. Key keys at both ends are facing the opposite direction, key up corresponds to key down.

Type B (staggered type),the core arrangement positions at both ends of the jumper are opposite, that is, 1 at one end corresponds to 12 at the other end, and 12 at one end corresponds to 1 at the other end. The key direction of the two ends is the same, that is, key up corresponds to key up, and key down corresponds to key down.

Type C (Paired Interleaved Type), Type C MPO jumpers are a pair of adjacent cores crossed, that is, core 1 at one end corresponds to 2 at the other end, and core 12 at one end is 11 at the other end. The direction of the Key keys at both ends is also opposite, key up corresponds to key down.

The three-polarity connection method and the different polarity method use different types of MPO backbone optical cables. However, all methods must use duplex fiber optic patch cords to form optical fiber links. The TIA standard also defines two different types of LC or SC duplex fiber optic patch cords to complete the end-to-end duplex connection, A-A (cross-over) fiber optic patch cord and A-B (straight-through) fiber optic patch cord.

Sopto can provide OM3, OM4 and also OM5 MPO/MTP fiber patch cords,fan-out cables and MPO/MTP cassettes and HD MPO/MTP Patch Panels. Normally MPO fan-out cables are offered in OM3 and OM4 with 8 or 24 fibers and OM5 with 8, 12 or 24 fibers with LSZH rated jackets. Sopto also provides a flexible boot option available with LC connectors which bends up to 90 degree without signal interruption. All these patch cords and fan-out cables are optimized for 40G QSFP+ SR4/CSR4, 100G QSFP28 SR4 optics direct connection in high-density data center applications.
