DDM means “Digital diagnostics monitoring”. It can monitor the parameters of fiber modules like optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage, in real time. So if there is any problems with your optical transceivers and can not work well. Then first you may get to see all these parameters of your transceivers at that time with DDM. Then you may find out the problem and solve it quickly.
And you can read the DDM information of the optical module via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
Now most fiber optic transceiver modules are with DDM function. So with using the SNMP, you can easy to get the real-time working condition of your fiber modules. So you are able to do the fault prediction also with DDM. As we all know, usually the output power of one normal optical module will be controlled at a stable level with increasing the bias current of the laser. The longer time the laser is increased, then the bigger quantum efficiency of the laser will be reduced. Therefore, users can monitor the laser's bias current to predict the laser's life. So with this prediction, the network administrator can start the backup link and repair the systems in advance.
