Nowadays fiber optical communication has become a mainstream of network development. However, during the network construction, many fiber optical cable are found being destroyed by rats and termites, especially in hilly and mountainous areas. Here we will discuss several ways to achieve anti-rodent and anti-termite for the fiber optical cable:
1. Chemical method
Chemical method mainly adopts adding rodent repellent in the jacket material, which belongs to strong irritation chemicals. A typical additive is capsaicin. It is an irritant for mammals, including humans, and produces a sensation of burning in any tissue with which it comes into contact. The cable cost of such method is low and has good anti rodent effective during some period, but not good for environment and repellent lifetime is not verified.
2. Physical method
Physical method can be classified into two types: one is to achieve anti-rodent through the hardness of material in the cable, such as steel tape, double layer steel wire, FRP rod.

The other one is to protect the fiber core through some sharp material which will hurt the rats when they are biting, such as glass yarn and glass ribbon.
