Introduction and application of QSFP28 fiber optical module

  • Learning Center    release time:2021-11-29
  • With the development of science and technology, people's speed requirements for optical fiber communication are also increasing. At present, 100G fiber optical modules are also used in various scenarios. 100G fiber optical modules have a variety of packaging forms, including CFP, CFP2, CFP4, CXP and QSFP28. Among these different packaging forms, QSFP28 fiber optical modules have become the best choice for 100G fiber optical modules due to their small size, high port density and low cost. The main packaging form is favored by enterprises, operators and data centers.

Next, this article will give a brief introduction to several main models of 100G QSFP28 SR4/LR4/IR4/ER4

    100GBASE QSFP28 SR4

100GBASE SPT-QSFP28-MSR4 is a parallel 100Gb/s Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable (QSFP28) fiber optical module. It provides increased port density and total system cost savings. The QSFP28 full-duplex fiber optical module offers 4 independent transmit and receive channels, each capable of 25Gb/s operation for an aggregate data rate of 100Gb/s on 100 meters of OM4 multi-mode fiber. An optical fiber ribbon cable with an MTP/MPO connector can be plugged into the QSFP28 module receptacle. Proper alignment is ensured by the guide pins inside the receptacle. The cable usually cannot be twisted for proper channel to channel alignment. Electrical connection is achieved through an MSA-compliant 38-pin edge type connector.

    100GBASE QSFP28 LR4

Compliant to the IEEE P802.3ba standard, the module converts 4 input channels of 25Gb/s electrical data to 4 channels of LAN WDM optical signals and then multiplexes them into a single channel for 100Gb/s optical transmission. Reversely on the receiver side, the module de-multiplexes a 100Gb/s optical input into 4 channels of LAN WDM optical signals and then converts them to 4 output channels of electrical data. The central wavelengths of the 4 LAN WDM channels are 1295.56, 1300.05, 1304.58 and 1309.14 nm as members of the LAN WDM wavelength grid defined in IEEE 802.3ba. The high performance cooled LAN WDM EA-DFB transmitters and high sensitivity PIN receivers provide superior performance for 100Gigabit Ethernet applications up to 10km links and compliant to optical interface with IEEE802.3ba Clause 88 100GBASE-LR4 requirements. The product is designed with form factor, optical/electrical connection and digital diagnostic interface according to the QSFP+ Multi-Source Agreement (MSA). It has been designed to meet the harshest external operating conditions including temperature, humidity and EMI interference.

    100GBASE QSFP28 CWDM4

Compliant to 100GBASE CWDM4 MSA standard. The module converts 4 inputs channels(ch) of 25Gb/s electrical data to 4 CWDM optical signals, and multiplexes them into a single channel for 100Gb/s optical transmission. Reversely, on the receiver side, the module optically de-multiplexes a 100Gb/s input into 4 CWDM channels signals, and converts them to 4 channel output electrical data. The central wavelengths of the 4 CWDM channels are 1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331 nm as members of the CWDM wavelength grid defined in ITU-T G.694.2. It contains a duplex LC connector for the optical interface and a 38-pin connector for the electrical interface. To minimize the optical dispersion in the long-haul system, single-mode fiber (SMF) has to be applied in this module. Host FEC is required to support up to 2km fiber transmission.

    100GBASE QSFP28 ER4 Lite & OTU4

100GBASE-ER4 Lite & OTU4 40km QSFP28 fiber optical module (SPT-QSFP28-ER4) is designed for use in 100-Gigabit Ethernet and OTN links up to 30km without FEC or 40km with FEC on Single Mode Fiber (SMF). It is compliant with the QSFP28 MSA, 4WDM-40 MSA, IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE-ER4 and IEEE 802.3bm CAUI-4, and OTU4 standards. Digital diagnostics functions are available via an I2C interface, as specified by the QSFP28 MSA. It converts 4 input channels of 27.95Gb/s electrical data to 4 channels of LAN-WDM optical signals and then multiplexes them into a single channel for 111.8Gb/s optical transmission. Reversely on the receiver side, the module de-multiplexes a 111.8Gb/s optical input into 4 channels of LAN-WDM optical signals and then converts them to 4 output channels of electrical data. The central wavelengths of the 4 LAN-WDM channels are 1295.56nm, 1300.05nm, 1304.58nm and 1309.14nm as members of the LAN-WDM wavelength grid defined in IEEE 802.3ba.
